The perfectly matched operators of Berenger Jeffrey Rauch (University of Michigan)
For the numerical computation of electromagnetic
waves in unbounded domains
Berenger introduced,
in the early nineties,
the method of perfectly
matched layers. The computational
domain is surrounded by a layer in which
a new
and absorbing differential equation is satisfied.
The astonishing
feature is the complete absence of reflections
from the interface. The new
differential equation is hyperbolic
but only weakly hyperbolic. The proof of
perfection
is recent work with L. Halpern and S. Petit.
