General information

Pisa, 22 December 2011

Dear Erasmus Incoming Student,

I am the Erasmus coordinator at the department of mathematics "L. Tonelli" of the University of Pisa. Please note: if your are not a math student you should contact the appropriate coordinator for your subject. You can find here the list of all the Erasmus coordinators at the University of Pisa.

Here and here you can find information on, among other things, accomodation, language courses and the university canteens. You can also try to get some help with accommodation by sending an email to our central international offices: welcomepoint@adm.unipi.it. You can attend courses of Italian for foreigners. The courses are free of charge, but you need to take an entry exam to assess your level: you can find the latest information here. Sport activities are possible while in Pisa, joining the University Centre for Sport activities. The University of Pisa has a Choir and a Youth Orchestra. Check out the project Meet-a-Mate by the Erasmus Student Network Pisa.

Please remember that at some point you should let me have your "Learning agreement" form. Notice that completing the form involves choosing a program of study and usually getting signatures and stamps from both your local and institutional Erasmus coordinators. In any case, as soon as you know that you are coming please let me know your data (name, surname, date and place of birth, period of stay.

Enrollment procedure at the University of Pisa:

First step: connect to Alice (the online portal to the student services) in the web page https://www.studenti.unipi.it. The link in English is here. Click on Registration under Reserved Area and follow the instructions.

Second step: before leaving your country or when you arrive in Pisa write to the International Relations Office international@adm.unipi.it and ask for an appointment. The IRO is located in Lungarno Antonio Pacinotti 43/44 and it is open:
Monday/Wednesday/Friday 9--11. At the IRO you will receive:
- your student record book
- credentials to have access to the University net
- information on getting a canteen card

The courses offered for the academic year 2011-2012 can be found here. If you have questions on a specific course you can contact directly the corresponding teacher. E-mail addresses of members of the math department can be found here. The math department is in Largo Bruno Pontecorvo, 5, my office is n. 45 on the first floor (follow the corridor on the right).

I normally do not issue an Acceptance Letter (the signature on the Learning Agreement should be enough). I am happy to sign one if necessary, but you are kindly requested to produce a template for it (possibly, an official template issued by the authority requiring the acceptance letter).

If you live in Italy for more than 3 months you are required by Italian law to register as a resident in the Town (or "Comune") where you live. In Pisa you need to go to the Ufficio Anagrafe. To be able to register as a resident you first need to register with the Italian National Health Service (Servizio Sanitario Nazionale). To do that, you have to go with your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) to the Presidio Distrettuale Via Torino in Pisa, via Torino 8 (for information you can call the number: 050-954906).

I am looking forward to seeing you in Pisa!
