We review some recent results concerning the structure of 3-manifolds
one gets by doing Dehn surgery along a knot in the standard 3-sphere.
Special emphasis of the appearance of contact topological arguments will
be given. In a slightly different direction we examine when tight contact
structures on such manifolds exist. The main technical tool in these
results is Heegaard Floer theory, which will be briefly reviewed.
