Master’s Degree Course Study Plans

Every student must submit a personal study plan before 30th November of their first year (or within a month after enrolment, if later than that date). The study plan is created using the CAPS interface, which is accessible with the personal academic credentials (the same ones used for the Alice portal). The plan will then be evaluated by the Study Plans Committee.

The Committee needs that one of the following representatives, depending on the study programme, signs (using CAPS) the study plan in order to guarantee its coherence:

  • Logic: Alessandro Berarducci
  • Algebra: Ilaria Del Corso
  • Geometry: Riccardo Benedetti
  • Mathematics education and history of mathematics: Pietro Di Martino
  • Mathematical analysis: Giovanni Alberti
  • Probability and statistics: Marco Romito
  • Mathematical physics: Giovanni Federico Gronchi
  • Numerical analysis: Dario Andrea Bini
  • Operational research: Giancarlo Bigi

If a study plan does not belong to a specific programme, or in other special cases, it can be signed by the President of the Study Course Council.

If a student wants to change a study plan that has already been approved, they can submit a new one. However, new plans must be presented with due notice with respect to the graduation date.

The Master’s Degree Course in Mathematics is structured in five programmes:

  • Applied;
  • Educational;
  • General;
  • Modelling;
  • Theoretical.

The programme is chosen when submitting the study plan.

Notes:

  • Bachelor’s Degree students in Mathematics in Pisa wishing to enrol to the Master’s Degree Course from the academic year 2022/23 and choosing the Theoretical programme must pass at least one exam from MAT/01 (Logic) during their full cycle of studies (Bachelor’s + Master’s).
  • Students enrolling to the Master’s Degree Course, Educational programme, from the academic year 2022/23 and choosing a theoretical foundation from the IstAppTeor group must select in their study plan at least one applied exam for 6 CFU/ECTS (MAT 06/07/08/09).
  • Students with a Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics from the University of Pisa, enrolled from the Academic Year 2022/23 must pass the following exams (if they were not already inserted in the study plan of their Bachelor’s Degree):
    • students who do not choose the Applied programme, three exams to choose from:
      • Elements of Set Theory
      • Algebra 2;
      • Mathematical Analysis 3
      • Probability;
      • Differential Geometry and Topology;

Notes

  • Students must choose which exams they intend to pass when submitting their study plan. Students may also include some free-choice courses from the ones not already selected in the study plan, or:
    • Courses active at other departments of the University
    • Master’s courses at Scuola Normale Superiore
    • Ph.D. courses at University of Pisa or at Scuola Normale Superiore
    • Internships at a private or public organization that has an agreement with the Department of Mathematics or the University of Pisa.
  • Not all courses described in the Handbook are active each year; please check the list of active courses before choosing the exams to include in the study plan.
  • Please note that the enrollment to the Master’s Degree Course may impose some provisions, i.e. educational activities that must be included in the study plan.
