The Technical University of Sofia is the largest educational and scientific complex in Bulgaria in the field of technical and applied science with an institutional accreditation grade of 9.5 (on the scale of 10) for the period 2012 – 2018. As the first and largest polytechnic center, which supported the establishment of most of the higher technical colleges in the country, it sets the educational standards and national priorities for the development of engineering education and science.

The Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Informatics (FAMI) was founded in 2000 as a successor to the Center for Applied Mathematics, set up in 1970. Currently FAMI employs 45 lecturers, 21 of which are professors and assoc.-professors, 25 Doctors, 3 being D.Sc. holders and 4 PhD students. The members of FAMI staff teach students in Applied Mathematics specialty who become specialists with high qualification, and are also responsible for mathematical education in all faculties of Technical university of Sofia.

George Venkov is a Dean of Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Informatics (FAMI). He was granted the NATO – CNR research fellowship and has accomplished research project in collaboration with University of Pisa. He has also received research grants and contracts from the Research and Development Sector of Technical University of Sofia.
