“Daniela di Serafino” International Doctoral Award – 2025

We are pleased to announce that at the first edition of the “Daniela di Serafino” International Doctoral Award – 2025, Dr. Igor Simunec, formerly a student of our Department and currently at the Institute of Mathematics of the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, has been selected as the winner for his doctoral thesis “Advances in polynomial and rational Krylov methods for matrix functions with applications”, defended at the Scuola Normale Superiore.

Established to honour the scientific legacy of Daniela di Serafino, this award recognises outstanding doctoral dissertations in mathematics based on criteria such as originality, quality of results, methodological innovation, and impact on the relevant scientific field.

We are also particularly proud to highlight that our research fellow Dr. Miryam Gnazzo received an Honourable Mention for her thesis “On the approximation of the closest singular matrix-valued functions” (Gran Sasso Science Institute), which presents innovative and computationally effective results in the study of distance-to-singularity problems for matrix-valued functions, combining advanced tools from numerical linear algebra and optimization.

The award ceremony will take place on 12 January 2025, at 10:30 a.m., at the Rectorate of the University of Campania “Luigi Vanvitelli”. For more information please visit the following page.
