The Ph.D. Programme in Mathematics at the University of Pisa has its roots in the time-honoured tradition of excellence of the mathematical school in Pisa.
Many of the professors of the Department of Mathematics are recognised internationally for their contributions to research and actively nurture a vast network of scientific relationships. Students can benefit from a considerable number of courses offered by the Ph.D. School, taught by professors of the Department, their collaborators of recognized international level, and external professors active in the territory on projects of applied mathematics.
Within the Department, there are several high-level scientific research groups: from those active in the most theoretical areas, such as Logic, Algebra, Geometry, and Analysis, to those more open to applications and/or interactions with companies and the territory, such as Probability, Mathematical Physics, Numerical Analysis, Mathematics Education, and History of Mathematics.
The Ph.D. Programme in Mathematics aims to provide capable and motivated students with a qualified preparation, introducing them to research in all areas of mathematics, from the most theoretical to the most applied.
The strengthening of Ph.D. activities is a cornerstone objective of the Department of Excellence project, active at the Department of Mathematics of the University of Pisa between 2023 and 2027.
There is also an intense seminar activity and numerous conferences and summer schools organized at both the Department and the Scuola Normale Superiore, as well as at the Mathematical Research Center “E. De Giorgi”.
It is worth highlighting the close scientific connection with the Scuola Normale Superiore, one of the leading institutions for mathematics worldwide. Students can attend the advanced courses and the specialisation courses offered by the Scuola Normale Superiore.
