Study Plan

Each student is required to submit their study plan by November 30 of the first year (or within one month of enrollment, if this occurs after that date).
To prepare their personal study plan, students must use the CAPS interface, accessible with their university credentials. The plan will then be evaluated by the Career Committee. A study plan may be submitted multiple times during the academic career, but submissions are allowed only within the following three windows of the academic year:

  • 1 September – 30 November;
  • 1 February – 31 March;
  • 1 June – 30 June.

Any study plan submitted outside these periods will remain pending and will be evaluated during the next available submission window. In urgent or exceptional cases, students may request early evaluation from the President of the Degree Programme.

The Committee also requires that study plans be countersigned through CAPS (after submitting the study plan in CAPS, use the “request review” button) by one of the following curriculum advisors, who will verify its coherence:

If the study plan does not fall under any curriculum, or in other special cases, it may also be countersigned by the Chair of the Joint Board of Study Programs.
If a student wishes to submit a free (custom) study plan, they must email the President of the Study Programmes explaining the reasons for the request.

The Master’s Degree Program in Mathematics is organized into five curricula:

  • Applied Curriculum;
  • Educational Curriculum;
  • General Curriculum;
  • Modelling Curriculum;
  • Theoretical Curriculum.

Curriculum selection takes place when submitting the study plan.

To modify an already approved study plan, it is sufficient to submit a new one.
Similarly, if a student wishes to change their curriculum, they may simply submit a new study plan with the updated curriculum.
Changes to the study plan and curriculum take effect immediately upon approval.

New study plans must, however, be submitted well in advance of the intended graduation date.

The valid study plan is always the latest submitted and approved.

IMPORTANT: It is essential to select the option corresponding to one’s own year of enrollment.
For earlier enrollments or for additional details, please refer to the curriculum framework of the Master’s Degree Program on the dedicated webpage.

Notes

  • All choices must be indicated at the time of submitting the study plan. As “free-choice activities,” students may include courses of the Degree Programme not already in their plan, as well as:
    • Courses offered by other Degree Programmes at the University
    • Master’s-level courses offered by the Scuola Normale Superiore
    • Ph.D. courses offered by the University or by the Scuola Normale
    • Internships at private companies or public institutions affiliated with the Department of Mathematics or with the University of Pisa
  • Not all courses listed in the curriculum framework and present in the various groups are offered every year; students are advised to consult the course offer to check which courses are available before choosing.
  • Please note that admission to the Master’s Degree Programme may include requirements, i.e., educational activities that must necessarily be included in the study plan.
  • Changes to the curriculum or study plans submitted and approved through CAPS are not automatically recorded in Alice.
    For the Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree Programmes in Mathematics, the valid curriculum and study path are those defined in the latest study plan submitted and approved in CAPS. In conclusion, students are advised not to worry about discrepancies that may appear in Alice compared to the CAPS study plan; the academic record will be aligned with the latest approved study plan shortly before the graduation session for which the student has registered. It is nevertheless possible to request verification of Alice–CAPS inconsistencies by writing to patrizia.lenzi@unipi.it (University Student Office, reference for the Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree Programmes in Mathematics).
    Note: attach your CAPS study plan to the email and CC chiara.luzzati@unipi.it (Teaching Office of the Department of Mathematics). For the specific case of extra exams, please refer to the following page.

  • Students who have passed SNS exams included in their approved study plan must request that these exams be recorded in their University of Pisa transcript by sending the following documents to the administrative officer of the student office (patrizia.lenzi@unipi.it):
    • Self-certification of the SNS exam(s);
    • Approved CAPS study plan.
