Presentation

Students who choose to enroll in the Master’s Degree in Mathematics in Pisa can opt for one of five available tracks: applied, educational, general, modeling, or theoretical. Each track includes a number of core courses that systematically and thoroughly present the fundamental ideas of the main branches of mathematics (algebra, geometry, mathematics education, mathematical analysis, probability, mathematical physics, numerical analysis; with a selection of these topics depending on the chosen track). Within each track, however, students can also choose from many thematic courses on more advanced and recent topics (including logic, history of mathematics, and operations research, which are not covered in the institutional courses). Many of these courses are taught by faculty members from the Department of Mathematics (or the Department of Computer Science, for operations research) who conduct internationally recognized research in their fields. Furthermore, thanks to the strong and long-standing collaboration with the Scuola Normale Superiore, our students also have the opportunity to include in their study plans master’s or PhD courses offered by the Scuola Normale.

After completing the Master’s Degree, students may continue with a Ph.D. programme (several of which are offered by the University of Pisa) or enter the job market, where their advanced skills are highly valued.

Overview of the study programme:

  • The programme is demanding but allows students to acquire advanced skills that are highly appreciated in the job market, and also forms an ideal foundation for pursuing a Ph.D. in Mathematics;
  • Students may choose between five curricula: applied, educational, general, modeling, and theoretical.
  • Study plans include multiple elective choices within specific course groups, making them highly flexible; students may also include two completely free-choice courses. These may be selected from the offerings of other master’s or PhD programs at the University of Pisa (for instance, PhD courses in Mathematics offered by our Department can be viewed on the dedicated page) or from master’s or doctoral courses at the Scuola Normale in Pisa.
  • Numerous international agreements are in place, including Erasmus and joint degrees (double degrees), offering students the chance to enrich their education with study periods abroad or even earn a dual degree (more information available on the internationalization page).

Those seeking further inspiration or information on orientation activities are encouraged to visit the page dedicated to Third Mission initiatives (in Italian only).

Prospective students will find in the menu all necessary information, including details on available scholarships. In particular, for the 2025/2026 academic year, 6 INdAM scholarships will be available specifically for this Master’s Degree programme, of which at least 3 will be reserved for female students..

This initiative will continue: in the following years, additional scholarships will be available under the project that allowed our Department to be recognized as a Department of Excellence for 2023–2027.

Enrolled students will find in the menu detailed information useful for their study progress (for example, how to submit the study plan and apply for graduation, as well as all information regarding lectures and exams). They can also consult the curriculum frameworks (in Italian only).

Finally, a section of the menu is devoted to the collegial bodies and their resolutions and minutes, and quality certifications (in Italian only).
